asphalt was part of the collective residency a ghörigs hus? in the Bregenzerwald.
"The term ghörig stands for orderly, appropriate, good, right, reasonable, decent, obedient. It is omnipresent in Vorarlberg. [...] The word appears as soon as everyday judgements are at stake, and the confirmation of social conformity and recognition. Whatever or whoever deviates too far from the norm is not considered ghörig. Being ghörig appears as a desirable way of life. This project aims to renegotiate this concept and the social ideas associated with it."
— teil zeit raum
The installation grew over the week of the residency. It began as a scaffold of spruce poles, became a bare frame, the outline of a gable drawn into the air, and by the last day it was clad and painted red. From one point in the meadow, and only from there, it gives the house a new face. Take two steps to the side and the image falls apart: a thin sheet on stilts, the house itself still standing behind it.
What covers also offers itself. The platform beneath the gable became a stage. At the end of the week musicians played on it, and the audience sat in the grass, roughly where a living room would have been.
The installation opens a space between the real and the imagined. It erases what is there and leaves a surface for overwriting and reinterpreting norms and traditions.
