    Terrestrial Test Field

    The Terrestrial Test Fields are experimental plots on the grounds of Club Hybrid in Graz, a follow-up to Terrestrial Fields. Scattered across the site, they are areas withdrawn from human use. They make visible the actors and living beings that urban planning leaves out. As objects of cohabitation, they point to the vast amount of land sealed by construction and to the resulting threat to species and biodiversity.
    Built from the materials of the construction industry, rebar and scaffolding nets, the objects hold micro-wildernesses that stand out against their surroundings. The contrast sharpens the perception of the untamed and untended, and opens up the aesthetics of these surfaces within a human order.
    The Terrestrial Test Fields ask whether and how these surfaces develop a life of their own. How do they behave compared with their surroundings? Which animals and plants settle there? What happens to a fragment of urban ecosystem when it is left to itself?
    Ecologists and entomologists accompanied the project and documented the flora and fauna as it emerged. Besides a series of drawings, the project produced a poster, a film and a memorandum.
