Young architects who are just building up their own practices find themselves in the midst of urgent issues — climate crisis, rising construction costs and higher rents, buildings as objects of speculation — and with limited room for manoeuvre. What form does architecture take when architects consistently engage with social and environmental issues? What does this architecture of the future look like? How do young architects find worthwhile commissions? How do they initiate projects themselves? How can more equitable living spaces and working structures be designed in collaboration, and maintained together?

The concerns and positions of young architects were first gathered in interviews, by and with those affected, and then condensed collectively in a series of workshops across Austria.

In 2022, Ella Felber and Silvester Kreil interviewed 60 young architects practising in and around Austria for the series "Junge Architekt*innen verorten sich" on nextroom. They are building up their own practices, campaigning for fairer architectural work, seeking exchange and building networks. In spring 2023, 34 of them met for workshops in Linz, Dornbirn and Graz. Eight form the zkmb core team, which organised the workshop series and made the exhibition possible. The concerns raised most often became the content of the exhibition Back and Forth Cost Estimates, Breastfeeding and Turnaround Strategies at the Architekturzentrum Wien.

Within the core team, Natascha Peinsipp and Felix Steinhoff organised the workshops in Graz and Vienna, developed and built the exhibition design, and contributed to fundraising and to collecting, mapping and curating the content.
