World Wide Sharing

World Wide Sharing is a typology atlas of shared space, developed for the Reallabor Space Sharing at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design.

Since 2015, the Reallabor has investigated how existing and new buildings, streets and squares can be used more intensively through multiple uses. Space sharing is a key lever for curbing the still growing demand for space in urban regions while revitalising them sustainably.

The atlas began online. From 2018, a research blog served as a shared logbook, tagged by time, theme and place: a digital archive of everything the Reallabor tested, built and discussed. The printed catalogue carries this archive into book form, hence the title. It documents almost six years of research, from an interim use in Stuttgart's Calwer Kopf to space-sharing pop-ups in museums such as the ZKM Karlsruhe and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

At its core are typology studies. Two icons of modernism, Le Corbusier's machine à habiter and the Dreischeibenhaus by HPP, are taken apart and rebuilt as hybrids: temporary, flexible, reconfigurable spaces open to many uses and users. Where modernism separated functions, living, working, cooking, growing and trading are set back into relation.
